 "Good camera" 2010-04-06
By D.S.
The only real shortcoming of this camera is that the new model came out. Still, it is has gone up in price with the introduction of the new model, and it is supposed to stay in production.

A good investment in lenses is needed to take advantage of the sensor.`

The video focusing is pretty basic, not any good for moving objects.

Battery life is quite good, similar to a 350D, focusing is faster and it has spot focus.

"Great Picture quality and easy to use." 2010-03-10
By Weather Girl (St Albans)
I previously had the Canon 400d and have had good use of it for 3 years since it was working well I was in two minds about whether to upgrade. I am so glad I did . This is compatible with all my old lenses and I am loving the results .

 "Quite simply fantastic" 2010-01-29
By N. JOHNSON
This is not my first camera, it's not even my first SLR, however this is by far and away the best camera I have ever owned.

It is very user friendly, is compatible with the entire range of EF and EF-S lenses (which is good as one of mine is over 20 years old) and the clarity of image is simply brilliant.

I could go on about the technology, but I am not going to.

This is simply a great camera.

"Superb DLSR for all levels of competence." 2010-01-29
By M. Lee (London, England)
I recently bought this camera to replace my EOS 350D which had served me well for the past 4 years.

There are a number a great improvements since the 350D. The ISO range has been extended to 128000 which is great for extremely low light applications (although a lot of digital noise is not surprisingly apparent). The viewing screen on the back of the camera is much larger and clearer and the menus easier to read and understand. It can also be used to view the image being taken as an alternative to using the SLR viewfinder (just like on a compact). It has an HD movie mode too although I haven't personally found a use for it yet.

For novices it can be used in fully automatic or a range of preselected creative modes for landscape, portraiture etc. or be used in a range of semi automatic modes such as aperture or shutter priority or full manual control.

I usually shoot in RAW format (only available in semi automatic modes) which requires post processing with the software supplied in order to creat jpeg or tiff images but for users in more of a hurry or who want to use pic bridge or direct from card printing it can also shoot in jpeg mode or both simultaneously.

The buffer for continuous shooting is huge and will run at over 3 frames per second for over 300 shots in jpeg mode or 9 in RAW.

Resolution is also fine at over 15 megapix.

The lenses are Canon EF type which has an enormous range and are readily available both new and second hand, giving full autofocus or manual focus at the flick of a switch. Many lenses are also available with image stabilisation (have the letters IS in their model description).

An all round great performer which is light and easy to carry about and simple to use. I am delighted with this camera and would recommend it to anyone looking for a first DSLR or an upgrade.

"Canon EOS 500D Body Only" 2010-01-16
By B. R. Crane (UK)
I placed an order for the Canon EOS 500D on the 28th Dec and it came the next working day, how good is that? Well I'll tell you this, it's good but not as great as the camera itself. I have taken over 1000 digital photos with it already. I already had some Canon lenes, EFS 17-85 IS,EFS 28-135 IS, and EFS 70 - 250 IS which I used with my 400D so I was able to compare camera bodies quite easily. The 500D is magnitudes better than the 400D, I am amazed just how good it is, and at the price it's offered by Amazon it's a brilliant deal. Anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive DSLR should look no further than the Canon EOS500D. I have also purchased the Opteka Battery Grip and Remote Shutter Release through Amazon, I am really please with them all, do yourself a favour and order the Canon and accessories now, Amazon will get them to you fast, and at a great price.

 "Very good camera" 2010-04-01
By Don Pelayo (Asturias)
This is a superb budget D-SLR camera at the cheap end of the market.

I bought as a replacement for my 350D mainly as the 350D is now mostly used for time lapse and remote shooting so needed a new SLR for my main work.

I assumed it would just be a case of having more pixels but this really is a generation or two advanced over the 350D.

The build quality is excellent but the screen is the most striking, it's huge , 3 inches and I like the ability to change colors, the green mode is fantastic for night time.

Is very light and well balanced and it handles very well.

Live view is a useful addition (which I doubt I'd use a lot as it does slow operation down) but it uses a lot of energy.

Image quality is much better than the 350D. Less noise and with the extra pixels it appears much sharper, ideal for me as I shoot with a fish eye a lot and so need to crop in sometimes.

Another addition over the 350D is sensor cleaning which I hope will reduce the dust issues creeping into my 350D. Overall, very pleased so far.

 "Snappy Shooter" 2010-03-28
By M. Jones (GB)
I have used a Canon SLR camera since 1984 with excellent results. It was a 35mm film camera. When I saw what this digital camera is capable of, I realized that I had persevered for too long with the old technology.

It is so quick and easy to use. Results are instant -- instantly stored or instantly disposed of -- which allows a professional style technique as regards shooting. Many more pictures of each subject can be taken and with the large screen you can choose the picture you want to save.

It's just perfect.

 "Another Winner From Canon" 2010-03-27
By C. Hillary (Durham)
I am a keen amateur photographer of many years and have been a very satisfied owner of an earlier Canon EOS 350D model for about 5 years.

I thought it was time to upgrade.

My first impressions are that the 500D is a huge step forward.

The camera is very well built and specified and produces excellent results for both the novice using the Auto/Pre-Programmed modes as well as providing ample flexibility for more experienced photographers.

The review screen is exceptionally clear and the layout of functions easy to understand and use.

The included EF-S 18-55 mm lens is sharp, well balanced with the camera and the Image Stabiliser works well giving good results in a greater range of photographic conditions. This lens shows significant improvement over my current Sigma zoom lens.

I am very happy with the purchase and would have no hesitation in recommending this camera.

 "Fantastic entry level DSR" 2010-03-11
By R. Rendle (UK)
Gorgeous screen, with beautiful icons and menus (the pictures dont do it justice), the quality of the build of the machine, the brilliant beginner stock lens and the HD video recording ability make this Canon an absolute must buy for beginners. I've only just got into photography and the learning curve of this professional looking camera is not as steep as I imagined it would be at first.

Anyone considering getting this: just do it. Its phenomenal, and you wont regret it for a second, even if your just going to use the stock 18-55mm lens.

 "Cannon 500D" 2010-03-09
By res boy (uk)

This camera is a typical cannon, easy to operate with very good performance, very pleased with results to date.

However, be careful with non cannon lenses some do not have chips which operate the lens mechanism.
