The answer to very very very annoying problem Sony have given all their new camcorders with the "intelligent hot-shoe" (which nothing uses - not even Sony microphones etc.)
The boom arm just screws on into the tripod-screw on the base of your camcorder (or camera if you want, via the little screw in the top-right of the image
The genius bit is that there is a screw thread on the under-side of this screw, so you can still place your camcorder / camera on the tripod - very good news
The only downside is that a heavy-ish flash unit or microphone can cause the camera to be a little bit tilted (more expensive tripods will easily correct this problem, but cheaper ones can't so easily without setting one of the legs to counter-act with gives problems of panning etc.) as they are a few inches out from the camcorder as they are bulky - it's a small point but you will notice it and have to account for it in filming
An incidental bonus is that you can use this boom arm with a camera when not on a tripod to help you stabalise the camera with 2-hands, so shots in lower light are easier, or producing videos which'll look more professional
The whole thing is very easy to setup, and is blindingly obvious to be honest, so there's no problem with installation
For the price you pay and what you get in return it's a brilliant piece of kit and solves the problem Sony very kindly gave to us (with no solution to it either...)
