The EOS 550D redefines the boundaries of Canon's consumer DSLR range, incorporating technologies and features more commonly found in semiprofessional DSLRs into the compact, lightweight body favoured by consumers. With a newlydeveloped 18 Megapixel (MP) APS-C CMOS sensor, coupled with Canon's advanced DIGIC 4 image processor and the ability to shoot Full HD movies, photography enthusiasts are empowered to explore new levels of creativity. The EOS 550D makes Canon's powerful imaging technology more accessible to consumers. Canon's advanced DIGIC 4 image processor and 18MP sensor support standard ISO settings of 100 6400 (expandable to 12800), while enhanced incamera noise reduction technology boosts performance in low light conditions. The system's 14bit image processing also produces smoother tonal gradation and natural looking colours for high quality prints and on-screen display.

For swift and accurate focusing, the EOS 550D features a 9point AF system with one extrasensitive crosstype point at the centre for f/2.8 or faster lenses. The EOS 550D also supports highspeed, continuous shooting at 3.7 frames per second (fps). These features provide users with the opportunity to exert greater control over their images, allowing them to capture splitsecond moments with ease and accuracy.

 "Good camera" 2010-04-06
By D.S.
The only real shortcoming of this camera is that the new model came out. Still, it is has gone up in price with the introduction of the new model, and it is supposed to stay in production.

A good investment in lenses is needed to take advantage of the sensor.`

The video focusing is pretty basic, not any good for moving objects.

Battery life is quite good, similar to a 350D, focusing is faster and it has spot focus.

"Great Picture quality and easy to use." 2010-03-10

I previously had the Canon 400d and have had good use of it for 3 years since it was working well I was in two minds about whether to upgrade. I am so glad I did . This is compatible with all my old lenses and I am loving the results .

 "Quite simply fantastic" 2010-01-29
By N. JOHNSON
This is not my first camera, it's not even my first SLR, however this is by far and away the best camera I have ever owned.

It is very user friendly, is compatible with the entire range of EF and EF-S lenses (which is good as one of mine is over 20 years old) and the clarity of image is simply brilliant.

I could go on about the technology, but I am not going to.

This is simply a great camera.

"Superb DLSR for all levels of competence." 2010-01-29
By M. Lee (London, England)
I recently bought this camera to replace my EOS 350D which had served me well for the past 4 years.

There are a number a great improvements since the 350D. The ISO range has been extended to 128000 which is great for extremely low light applications (although a lot of digital noise is not surprisingly apparent). The viewing screen on the back of the camera is much larger and clearer and the menus easier to read and understand. It can also be used to view the image being taken as an alternative to using the SLR viewfinder (just like on a compact). It has an HD movie mode too although I haven't personally found a use for it yet.

For novices it can be used in fully automatic or a range of preselected creative modes for landscape, portraiture etc. or be used in a range of semi automatic modes such as aperture or shutter priority or full manual control.

I usually shoot in RAW format (only available in semi automatic modes) which requires post processing with the software supplied in order to creat jpeg or tiff images but for users in more of a hurry or who want to use pic bridge or direct from card printing it can also shoot in jpeg mode or both simultaneously.

The buffer for continuous shooting is huge and will run at over 3 frames per second for over 300 shots in jpeg mode or 9 in RAW.

Resolution is also fine at over 15 megapix.

The lenses are Canon EF type which has an enormous range and are readily available both new and second hand, giving full autofocus or manual focus at the flick of a switch. Many lenses are also available with image stabilisation (have the letters IS in their model description).

An all round great performer which is light and easy to carry about and simple to use. I am delighted with this camera and would recommend it to anyone looking for a first DSLR or an upgrade.

"Canon EOS 500D Body Only" 2010-01-16
By B. R. Crane (UK)
I placed an order for the Canon EOS 500D on the 28th Dec and it came the next working day, how good is that? Well I'll tell you this, it's good but not as great as the camera itself. I have taken over 1000 digital photos with it already. I already had some Canon lenes, EFS 17-85 IS,EFS 28-135 IS, and EFS 70 - 250 IS which I used with my 400D so I was able to compare camera bodies quite easily. The 500D is magnitudes better than the 400D, I am amazed just how good it is, and at the price it's offered by Amazon it's a brilliant deal. Anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive DSLR should look no further than the Canon EOS500D. I have also purchased the Opteka Battery Grip and Remote Shutter Release through Amazon, I am really please with them all, do yourself a favour and order the Canon and accessories now, Amazon will get them to you fast, and at a great price.

 "Convergence technology that works" 2009-12-21
By MosiMapk (Russia)
Fed up as I was of lugging about small back packs full of lenses, adapters, filters etc and wanting DSLR quality I settled on the GF1. This is a small ( although not compact ) camera that will just about fit in a pocket. As others have described its technical qualities I wont repeat them - they are however staggeringly good. The real advantage to the semi novice is the combination of easy point and shoot photography, DSLR quality and size. In a world of technology convergence the GF1 will meet almost all of your everyday needs. It is however not compromised by this convergence. Do shop around. Prices vary enormously. The cheapest `package' deal was found by bartering on Tottenham Court Rd, London. Cheaper than Amazon

 "LX3 to GF-1" 2009-11-15
By Sn Baines (st albans, hertfordshire United Kingdom)
Purchased the GF-1 to replace my much loved LX3 , Main reason is because i like taking a lot of pics of people esp my young fast moving son ! The GF-1 focus is as fast as my Nikon Dslr and shutter lag is as fast as my Nikon.

The longer zoom is also better for people and throws out the background better then the LX3 due to the larger senser and despite the slower GF-1 lens.

The IQ has really really impressed me more then anything , if you look close the GF-1 blows away the LX3 and matches a DSLR basically, Awesome IQ in a small package this is the dream ticket.

The build of the camera is fantastic feels very metal and solid and all the quick buttons are there for the most common stuff ie ISO, White Balance etc.

Screen is Brilliant and easy to compose even in bright sunlight.

Iso performance is about 1 stop behind my Nikon D50 which in my book is damm good as The D50 gives excellent 1600 ISO,, The GF-1 Is def usable at 1600 ISO though but 800 ISO is great, Raw development will yield even better results.

Talking of Raw and Jpeg some reviews have said the Jpeg processing is lacking a bit compared to some while this may be true i have found the camera gives Fantastic Jpeg results when i use Dynamic mode with the Contrast turned down and NR turned off and I personally do manual white Balance, This setting gives much better Blues and Greens and almost produces those famous Olympus colours on this setting.

Black and white Dynamic mode is Fantastic just like The LX3.

The Movie seems like a very nice extra but was,nt the reason for me to buy in any case.

While the GF-1 is larger then the LX3 which can be pocketed the loss of this is worth the sacrifice for me as the extras like faster focusing, better DOF control, speed of use and superior IQ put the GF-1 in the DSLR bracket.

The slightly larger size makes for good handling as well and although the Zoom lens is not as portable and fast as the pancake lens is it still very good and has IS and also adds to the handling as more to grab hold of.

Basically I Love this Panasonic and has made me want to take Photos more then ever B4.

"a little to early to tell - but first impressions are very favourable" 2009-10-16
By T. Nielsen-marsh
It really is too early to tell yet - but first impressions are very favourable. It was a choice between the G11 and this - and this won out - probably because I always found my G9 difficult to do close up work with and the additional lenses never quite worked well.

It was immaculately packaged, arrived on time and is a high quality object. I seldom read a manual - so it's good that the controls are intuitive. Working out what some of the settings do can be a little challenging, so the manual is a godsend. Pity it's not really written in English. It's a good approximation - but some of the explanations do take some fathoming out. This affects understanding quite a lot really and for a camera of this price is inexcusable. I am hoping that someone somewhere now writes up a real handbook that explains all the functions in a way that makes more sense.

Initial images are crisp and sharp - better than my G9 - but it will take a while before I can tell how much better it is. One snag so far - and it may be solvable somewhere - is that the control for bracketed exposures (I am playing with HDR) is also the control that sets the timer. This appears to mean that you cannot set the timer to control bracketed shots and thus have to keep your finger on the big shiny button! I hope I can solve this one without going to the expense of buying a remote release, otherwise camera shake is going to be an issue.

Nothing that I read in pre-release reviews picked this up.

More anon perhaps.

 "An excellent combination" 2010-04-14
By Keith Henry
This camera is a DSLR that you will actually take with you. It's still a fairly big piece of kit - it reminds me of the 35mm range finder that I had when I was a kid (an Olympus TRIP 35).

Put it on intelligent-auto mode and it's a camera anyone can use, and the interface to open up all the manual options is well designed and fairly easy to learn. Pass it to your point and shoot friend and they'll be able to use it, and if you're a DSLR user you'll feel at home.

The 20mm f1.7 lens is excellent and effortlessly takes rather nice bokeh effect shots. The body struggles a bit at ISOs above 400, but the wide aperture means that I rarely need them. Natural light and indoor shots come out great. It'll struggle in a darker environment like a nightclub, but it's also still to big to take on that sort of night out.

It fits in the pocket of my long overcoat, but is too heavy and bulky to carry there comfortably.

It's an excellent travel camera.

 "A Peach of a camera!" 2010-03-28
By Ian Gervais (London, United Kingdom)
I love this camera! I read numerous positive reviews before buying it and even then, it surpassed my high expectations. I usually use my Nikon D80 when picture quality is imperative but found it too big to carry with me all the time, particularly on holiday. The GF1 gives me the picture quality I want but is eminently portable. The GF1, particularly with the 20mm pancake lens, is a joy to use. I now take it out everywhere with me and have consequently taken many more pictures.

The one minor disappointment is the cost and the quality of the optional Electronic Viewfinder (DMC-LVF1) which is adequate but overpriced. I think I'll wait for the price to drop (between £100-£120 seems reasonable to me) before I buy or hopefully Panasonic will listen to it's customers and upgrade the resolution.

If image quality, portability and low-light capability are high on your list of priorities, I would recommend GF1 unreservedly.

"Gem of a camera ... appalling manufacture support" 2010-01-17
By Mr. Anthony D. Armstrong (united kingdom)
I purchased my GF1 from Amazon in November 2009, I have been a working photographer for several years, and the purchase was to replace a Canon G10 which had served me exceptionally well.

The GF1 itself is simply a gem, its low light capability is at least 3 stops better than the G10, and while not as compact offers greater flexibility. It has been my in the bag take everywhere camera since purchase for the moments that a large SLR are just to cumbersome.

Now the bad news, in early january went to turn the unit on, and nothing on the LCD screen, nor the accessory viewfinder. Camera still powers up, focuses fine and captures images, but both viewing options are dead. I contacted Panasonic and shipped the unit to them under warranty to have it repaired. I have just received their response telling me the damage is the result of impact, and will not be covered. Having now trawled the interweb I have discovered Panasonic are renowned for their denial of responsibility dating back to the FX7 / 8 and 9 models. A lengthy tirade is readable on photo.net from the dozens of disgruntled customers.

This has left a very very bitter taste in my mouth, the quote of repair £312 plus VAT. Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't baby my equipment, it is a tool to be used, but I can categorically state this camera has never suffered from impact outside of normal use, if its not capable of withstanding normal day to day use then their are issues to be addressed.

So while I endorse the product for its image quality, I'd give panasonic the biggest thumbs down for product support.

Buy at your own peril (and check your insurance paperwork for cover)

On the upside, camerasure insurance ... I cannot speak highly enough of, they paid the bill without question.

How do I rate this camera? Well, once I had it for a few weeks I sold ALL of my DSLR gear as it was redundant for my needs. I regard myself as a serious hobbyist and for my interests - street photography, urban, landscape and capturing a growing family - this is ideal. Excellent build, a joy to use and portable along with excellent image quality.

Love it. My best camera purchase ever.

 "Ideal for travelling" 2009-12-08
By Mr. T. Russell (Edinburgh, Scotland)
This is a truly marvellous camera from Panasonic. It has most of the functions of a SLR but none of the bulk or weight. With the 20mm lens fitted it is ideal as a "take it anywhere" camera but it has a larger sensor than most compacts and, therefore, handles low-light scenes much better. Most of the common functions are available without delving into menus and Panasonic's "intelligent" setting is useful if you're not too experienced. The zoom lenses that fit it are not large and a whole outfit could be easily carried in a small photo bag. Highly recommended if you want high quality images without the hassle of a large SLR.

 "Versatile and feature packed..." 2010-03-06
By S. Symonds (New Zealand these days!)
After selling my 40D last year, I was left with a brilliant but aged 1Ds. Stunning image quality, great build but ancient screen, rubbish battery, slow processor and tiny buffer. For some of the stuff I shoot, it just can't cut it so the 7D has come to the rescue :)

The 7D complements a full frame camera superbly and is without doubt the best camera I've owned. It's completely customisable - buttons, dials, autofocus - which helps make it a joy to use. Wireless flash control is extremely useful and I'm loving the ability to shoot video (which is stunning quality btw) and am using the camera for this increasingly. Image quality is decent but the noise-obsessed may complain about low ISO images as there is definitely a hint of noise at even 100iso. 6400iso cleans up better than 1600 did on my 40D with noise reduction working very well on 7D images thanks to the massive 18mp resolution.

The camera boasts a ridiculous amount of AF modes and tweakability. It certainly takes time to work your way through modes and settings to be able to pick the best for a given situation. One thing to note is that the 7D is pretty demanding of both lenses and technique thanks to the resolution of the sensor. Stick cheap glass on it or use lenses wide open and you'll start to see a drop off in image quality. It will also highlight the slightest bit of camera shake. Neither of these issues are the fault of the body, just something to be aware of. Other than that a superb camera - highly recommended!

I'd spent quite a lot of time researching all my options for a decent semi-pro / keen enthusiast camera before taking the plunge with the 7D.

I haven't regretted my choice for a single second since purchasing this magniifcent piece of equipment. It'll do everything you ask of it in the pre-set program settings and once you're comfortable to go fully manual it'll happily let you explore some more creative techniques.

I've read a multitude of reviews for this camera before and after purchasing it and there's been nothing but praise, the professional reviewers can't fault it and neither can I !

 "Canon EOS 7D" 2010-01-20
By Wigginer (UK)
First impressions excellent product. Typical Canon quality and the features are not gimicky and I can see a Pro-User find it very usable. I won't use them all, but there a few I've spotted that I will. I dropped the picture quality down a notch so I could compare quality with my Canon 20D. It looks far better by comparison and I am no expert. The video is sharp and far better than any camcorder I have owned, so I looking forward to my visit to USA this year and won't have lump around both.

Only negative is it didn't come with EU warranty pack (Japanese Import) but that does not affect the quality of the product and the supplier (who seems genuine) stated in his response to my that he would honour the 12 month warranty should anything go wrong.

Which to be honest I cannot see happening anyway.

"Stunning upgrade from a Canon Point and Shoot" 2010-01-05
By Dan (London, UK)
I received my Canon 7d with 15-85mm kit lens this morning. Whilst I didn't buy it from Amazon as they can be had cheaper elsewhere, I thought I'd share my experiences as a customer upgrading from a point and shoot (albeit with some manual control) as most reviews seem to be aimed at someone who already owns a SLR camera.

The first thing that struck me when I attached the lens and inserted the battery was the sheer solidness of the camera. It genuinely feels like little...Mercedes Benz in your hand. There isn't even the tiniest creak if you twist the camera body laterally, build quality feels seriously top notch.

Knowing my old Canon's menu system inside out and all it's features meant that learning the new one on the 7D took a matter of only about an hours shooting and another hour playing with the camera & manual. As of this evening, I'm comfortable with about three quarters of the available options and being able to create my own menu with just the options I want means I don't have to dig for them either. Perfect.

After getting used to the viewfinder and rattling off a hundred or so shots, I can really appreciate just how much more capable this camera is when compared to a pocket digital. Low light performance is stunning in comparison and shots that would previously require a tripod are simple hand held ones with the ISO at 1600...yet are still pretty to look at with very little noise visible.

The same applies to well lit scenes, the image quality is gorgeous and his this sort of velvety feel to them. Another huge stepup from my 10MP quick shooter. And although the weight is much more substantial than Im used to, bringing it up to focus and carrying it around feels very much worth the extra effort.

I don't want to go into all the technical stuff about the camera, other sites have done that to perfection already. I just want to share how my day was with any other would be point-and-shooters also considering upgrading to SLR and jumping in at the deep end while they're at it.

I know that there is lots more to come from this Canon 7D, but my gosh am I in love already.

I like the way I pick up and naturally take the camera into town on business trips and stop and take pictures of buildings, people, and things happening. It has a foolproof automatic setting for those that want such things, frames pictures well, is remarkably quick to wake up from switch on, and usually gets a usable result in bad lighting conditions. Controls are very well placed so rarely confused. Still lots to explore but I do like this camera.

 "My First EOS" 2010-02-02
By Mr. Luke Timms (England UK)
This camera is great, its my first "proper" camera and I am impressed! Once I got used to the menu system and how to switch between modes I was away as a novice user. Then moving along to more advanced settings was a great trial and error method, which is obviously the beauty of digital cameras, you can capture, view and try again.

I have taken this camera and lenses to Africa for Safari and have some AMAZING photos that I am very proud of. Most of the hard work was done by the camera, I merely pointed, set the correct white balance and fired away.

I did a lot of research before buying this camera and it came out tops for what I was after, I highly recommend this camera and lens for anyone starting off with Digital SLR cameras. I use it practically daily!

The extra chunk of cash for the lens pack was also worth it as its both a good lens and cheaper bundled like this. Yes you can get other makes cheaper, but I don't feel they are of the same quality as a Canon made one.

Overall a good buy and I'm very glad this is now part of my life!

"So much for a medium price." 2009-11-10
By RIK (Dudley, UK)
All I can say is this camera is fantastic. I have come through the ranks using various SLR's, onto digital compacts upon which I reached their limits and so last March bit the bullet and invested in an EOS 450d, I also purchased the 250mm lens and a couple of filters (based upon my original SLR uses). From opening the box this camera has done nothing more than deliver high quality and excellent shots. The manual provided is very basic and does not delve too much onto the complete spread of functions and utilities, however for a new user those type of functions may make it seem as being too complex to use and so I think Canon have given us a good compromise. The size, weight and feel of the camera lend you to knowing you have a serious piece of kit without being too heavy, cumbersome or uncomfortable, I have taken it abroad a few times this year and it certainly does not take up too much space, even with tripods and other items. I specialise in Landscape and Portrait photography and this year with this camera things have turned around, the battery life is incredible and even in high resolution mode depending on the size of memory card you use you have at hand the potential to shoot over 1000 images and more quite comfortably without the need of worrying about space to store them. I took some images of some sunsets and using the 250mm lens managed to get full frame, pin sharp, sunshots, and with the use of a couple of filters the results were quite simply stunning. I am by no means an accomplished photographer and found that to get these shots I had to delve into the further functions of the camera but the results were well worth the effort and I gained a wealth of knowledge and experience taking them. I was a little concerned as to whether the 250mm lens would be up to my expectations and since my old SLR had a 500mm lens I did not think that this new unit would in any way compare, oh how wrong I was, although the lens comes with the image stability function I still reverted to making sure I had a suitable mount to take my images and it was no problem at all for this unit, in fact I find myself now taking more pictures on the fly rather than hoping to be in the right place at the right time to grab an image. To date and over 6 months down the line I still enthuse about this camera and am in fact considering purchasing the newer version only because of the higher pixel range, but, in all honesty I can see me sticking with this unit for a few years yet and it will be hard to part with it. Those that have seen my images are extremely impressed and when you talk to people about the camera they know you are serious as soon as you mention the name. So if you you are a budding enthusiast wanting more bang to the buck then this unit is ideal. Even if you find that your digital compact leaves you wanting more then this is the ideal camera, and if you are a die hard film SLR buff and you really do not want to change then I seriously urge you to reconsider, this camera gives you all of the advantages of an SLR and a whole lot more plus you are getting up to date using a classic and as yet proven method of image taking. Because Canon have now released a newer version the prices are now falling slightly and so make it an even more viable purchase and investment, whether you are into general photography or specialise in a certain field this unit can handle it quite easily, from amateur to pro, it is up to you. For me, it is probably one of my better choices of purchase this year and cannot wait to get to use it again. A final note, the camera comes with an excellent software suite that gives you plenty of flexibility to enhance change, recolour or whatever it is you fancy with the final image. I am a Photoshop user and to date have not had to make any image adjustments to any shot taken, that in itself speaks volumes in saving time and getting the final image printed. I could go on a lot more about it, and yes I am biased about this unit, I try but cannot find fault with it, and it saddens me in so far as that my old SLR film days are long gone, the equipment, well, it is all boxed in the loft gathering dust and I will probably never use it again, maybe when the grand kids ask what we used to use and I will have them to show but that is about it. A shame yes, but technology has now caught up and leaves my old film days a remnant of the past. Still the upshot being that I no longer have to pay for developement or printing so it may in the end pay for itself that way.

 "Back into SLR's" 2010-02-01
By Nigel J. Dorey (Guernsey)
Having deserted SLR's some time ago for the Didgital easy option to save my neck and sanity, I have been tempted back in by the G1. I have been looking for some time for a new SLR, as I had missed the contol and quality to be fair. However I did not want several pounds of weight around my neck again, so what could I do?

Well I purchased the G1 and it is excellent, it is light, small (not too small) and so versatile it is amazing. the quality of photos is everything I could have wanted and the two lenses are superb. I am lucky, I live in Guernsey so I did not have to pay VAT (sorry), so the value was also out of this world. What a camera, If you want to get into SLR's or back into them, but do not want to go for the full on version, this is an excellent option. Spoil yourself

"Excellent Quality for a Smaller Camera" 2010-01-14
By J. Sill (England)
This is a great quality camera. Attractive and small, easy to use for first time photographers, this camera produces very high quality images. It has a nice feel, and isn't too big. I was very impressed with it, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

 "Panasonic Lumix G1- a little gem!" 2010-01-07
By John W. Thompson (England)
After many years of using film SLR cameras, I finally 'went digital' in 2007 with the purchase of a Canon A720IS compact for family/holiday shots and last year a Canon 500DSLR for serious photography. Both are excellent cameras, but I wanted a better camera for holidays and as a back-up for my DSLR. The choice is huge, but after trawling through numerous reviews I became intrigued by the new micro 4-3 format and bought a Panasonic DMC-G1 kit, 45-200 lens and spare battery.

I wasn't disappointed. With the kit lens fitted, it is small, light and a joy to handle. The 45-200 lens transforms it into a 'serious' camera but still light compared to a DSLR with telephoto lens. The whole package, including spare battery and charger, can easily be carried in a shoulder bag, and won't add much weight to the back-pack I use for my other cameras and lenses.

Initial trial shots with both lenses convinces me that it will easily produce images which can be printed up to A4, a size more than enough for most people. The EVF is the best I've seen, and the flip-out screen lets you take images from most angles. For those coming from point-and-shoot, the iA setting will let them take excellent shots while they come to terms with the more complicated controls with the aid of the comprehensive hand book. The two lenses together provide a focal range of 28 to 400 in film camera terms, again more than enough for most. The reviews say it's not so good in poor light, but if you must take photos in near darkness then be prepared to spend serious money.

All things considered, an excellent product and good value for money.

"Ideal for breathing new life into old Leica lenses (if you have some)" 2009-10-27
By M. Connelly (Netherlands)
Others have sung the general praises for this camera, so I won't repeat them. It is a great little camera: good quality kit lens, plenty feature to keep most photographers happy, but also good easy enough for snappers; good viewfinder and very decent picture quality, etc. etc.

But ... to add to K. Lim's list of people whom this camera would suit ... add:

People with old Leica M lenses, but don't want to spend thousands on a Leica digital M camera.

I have been looking for a solution for this for years, and this is it! I got an adapter ring for Leica M lenses on ebay for 50 quid (not the expensive official adapter) and this has breathed new life into three top quality lenses from the 1960s. The manual focus works great. The crop factor doubles the focal length, so my Leica Elmar 135mm becomes a whopping (for Leica) 270mm.

I appreciate not many people fall into this category but if you do, get your card out and buy the G1 now!
