"A long term owners review" 2010-04-05
By Will (england)
I have had this camera now for nearly a year and have taken around 3000 photo's with it.IMHO it is certainly the best camera I have ever owned and I have had Canons and others.I have it with the Nikor 18-200 VR lens and it makes a great combi.Having said that, it is not going to give you perhaps the out of the box results you might expect. The reason is that it's not really aimed at the point and shooters, you have to set it up to get the sort of output you want i.e. more or less saturation/sharpness/contrast, you are paying for these customising options so use them and you will get spectacular results, you can tailor it to suit yourself. Nikon by default go for a modest effect.I have my sharpness slightly up that is all, I do the rest in Photoshop Elements if I feel it's nescessary. The swivel LCD is very useful for low down near the grass when shooting flowers /pets,also overhead shots, I have even used it shooting around corners (difficult architectural shots).Unless you need to fit older non A/F lens dont bother with the D90 as it has the same innards as the D5000.You are paying for the A/F body hence the price difference and another 3ozs of weight. The D90 has a few more buttons whereas the D5000 is more menu operated but I can get at what I want pretty quick, You press the "i" button and you're straight in. There is a function button that you can dedicate,I have mine set up with ISO. A word of warning, make sure that you get a body that is not on recall, because they recalled them just after release last year for a power switch problem. Mine went back and Nikon UK had it 8 days door to door.Incidently I had no problem. Nikon have a list of all Serial Nos affected on their site UK and USA. Nikon UK told me that they would do the repair free of charge even out of guaranty but check that with them as I only had it verbally.I think most reputable dealers will have all new stock by now but it's if your buying unseen or secondhand you will have to be careful but it's easily fixed. Some credit to Nikon here as they did come out and let everyone know of the switch problem,it would have been easy to say nothing.

All in all an awesome camera, if I needed another body I wouldn't hesitate I would get another D5000.

 "Pity about the documentation" 2009-09-10

The camera is great but I have greatest difficulty in operating it.

WHY?

Because the printing of Users manual which accompanied the camera is of such poor quality that it is very difficult to read and understand.

For such an outlay I do expect better than this.
