New 10.2 effective megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor with the power to capture exceptional sharpness and faithful color at 3,872 x 2,592 pixels size. Inherits the industry-leading advanced imaging processing engine of Nikon professional D-SLR cameras. Color-independent pre-conditioning prior to A/D conversion works in harmony with high-precision digital image processing algorithms to produce natural-looking images that benefit from faithful color and tone reproduction. 3D Color Matrix Metering II automatic exposure control ensures ideal exposures in most lighting conditions. Evaluating brightness, color, contrast, selected focus area and camera-to-subject distance, the system references the data against an expanded onboard database created using data from more than 30,000 actual photographic scenes to instantly and accurately calculate the final exposure value for the shot. Variable center-weighted metering and spot metering centered on the active focus area are also available. Refined 11-area AF system packs the same number of focus areas available for the professional D2 series into a space-efficient system that features fast, precise operation. Each of the 11 focus areas can be used individually, the center sensor can be switched to wide-frame operation for broader coverage, and new Auto-area AF mode measures all 11 focus areas, automatically determines which of them are on the primary subject and activates only those areas. ISO AUTO mode automatically adjusts sensitivity between ISO 100 to 1600 to maximize available light and achieve optimal exposure. Sensitivity can also be set manually between ISO 100 to 1600 in steps of 1/3 EV, plus HI-0.3, HI-0.7 and HI-1. Three levels of High ISO Noise Reduction are available when shooting at high ISO settings. Long Exposure Noise Reduction is also available when shooting at shutter speeds of 8 seconds or slower.

 "Nikon D80" 2009-12-27
By Ms. Julia Larsson (London, England)
I upgraded from a Nikon D40 to the Nikon D80. A lot is similar - the menus, but quite a bit is different. I have more choices in ISO rating and in F stops - this was one of the main reasons for changing. I haven't used the camera much yet and I'm looking forward to taking some excellent pictures in the future.

"I am really pleased with my purchase." 2009-10-14
By G. Robertson (UK)

I first saw the D80 in use on a P&O cruise and saw the results taken by the photographers. I had been searching for a Nikon digital SLR as I had a collection of Nikon SLR lenses. However I found the new cameras have electronics in the lenses so it was quite hard to learn the camera. I now have the proper lens for the camera and so far the results seem to be very good, I can only get better. I would recommend anyone interested in this product used the 18-135 DX lens, the scope would be enormouse.

"A camera suitable for a serious amateur." 2009-09-12
By Mr. Roger V. Bulpitt (Plymouth UK)
After buying an `ordinary' digital when they first hit the market I found the delay in exposure times very frustrating. Having enjoyed SLR in the past I decided to invest in the D80 and have not been disappointed.

Almost a year after purchase I am still finding it an excellent camera and cannot fault it in any way.

I recommend this camera to you.

 "Superb DSLR" 2008-12-30

I bought my Nikon D80 just over a year ago and I've never looked back since. It's easy to use, easy to handle, very responsive and gives great results. As far as control goes, you can either do everything yourself, or you can let the camera do it all for you or every combination in between. There are several pre-programmed options, all of which you'll find easy to use after the first couple of gos and the menus, whilst they may be a bit daunting at first, are straight forward within a day or two.

The camera feels sturdy, unlike some plasticy equvalents from other manufacturers, but doesn't (to me anyway) feel over heavy, although if you're just switching to SLR, you'll feel the difference. Anyone who's owned a Nikon SLR before, as I have, will find it a seemless transition and your lenses will fit. Anyone switching from another manufacturer will find this a lot more robust than some of its opponents (not mentioning any brand names)

Its diversity is great, it gives beautiful landscape pictures yet, using the continuous shoot feature, it gets amazing action shots too. Everything from macro to portraits, from night landscapes to the fastest action shots, you won't be disappointed.

I bought the body only because I already owned a heap of Nikon fit lenses but, if you don't already own Nikon lenses, my advice is to go for the D80 with the 18-135 lens. The only other thing I think you need to be aware of is that the memory card doesn't come with the pack, you have to buy it separately.
